LONÁN MAC KINNON

There are characters I write, and then there are characters whose presence seems to linger long after I've closed the manuscript. Mac is certainly one of the latter. An Irish outlaw with a troubled past, a rather complicated relationship with the world, and an understanding of horses that often surpasses his understanding of people, Mac has been one of my most fascinating subjects to explore through drawing. This collection brings together my attempts to capture the man I've envisioned for so many years: his expressions, his silences, his vulnerability, and the peculiar tenderness that occasionally emerges from beneath his hardened exterior. From tentative sketches to more developed portraits and character studies, each drawing is another attempt to bring a little more of him out of my imagination and onto the paper. And goodness, what a difficult face he is to capture.
